Description

Logistics has been described as the art and science of moving things from here to there and storing them along the way. Specifically, logistics management can be defined as the management of the movement and storage activities performed by the firm. Over time, and in different organizations various names have been used to describe the management of logistics activities. Some of the terms used include physical distribution, rochrematics, materials management, distribution engineering, business logistics, logistical management, and supply-chain management (Ballou, 1992). Today, logistics management is the term most commonly used to identify and describe a firm's movement and storage activities. The Council of Logistics Management (CLM), the leading professional association of logistics managers and educators, has defined logistics as follows:
